Sonet
Dedicated SONET Ring (DSR) is a resilient, self-healing,
high-capacity transport network, capable of interconnecting
multiple customer locations within the Verizon
network, and enhanced to provide next-generation
SONET services.
SONET is a fiber-optic network architecture based
upon a set of national and international standards
for single-mode fiber transmission systems. It
can act as a transport path for many different
high-speed applications. It provides fast, near-100%
survivable transport over Verizon's ubiquitous
SONET network.
Common applications for DSR include disaster avoidance/business
continuity, aggregation of multiple services on
a common platform, simplified network management
and dedicated networks.
DSR offers multiple benefits to the customer,
including:
• Survivability
• Cost-effectiveness
• Multiple interface options
• Security
• Manageability
DSR provides the options customers require to
be competitive and stay in touch with their employees,
customers and partners. This optically-based networking
solution can enable customers to extend across
the street, across the state, or across the country.

ATM
Verizon Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) service
is a high performance technology that supports
high-speed networking and can integrate data,
voice, and video through a single communications
channel. ATM transports data across a private
network and gives security and scalability to
support today's applications. ATM is a global
end-to-end service spanning the U.S., Canada,
Europe and Asia Pacific.
ATM is a technology based upon international standards
for cell-switched, connection-oriented data transmission
allowing voice, video, and data communications
over a single virtual network. ATM represents
a specific implementation of cell relay, where
the data packets are known as cells and have a
fixed length of 53 bytes. ATM technology serves
both the local area network (LAN) and wide area
network (WAN) environments, providing scalability
for users' current and future needs.
ATM uses a highly redundant OC-12 backbone to
obtain these networking advantages. It is a public
data networking service offering a number of different
access speeds and supporting multiple classes
of service. ATM provides users with the security
and control of a private network, plus the flexibility
and economies of a public network. ATM allows
for the consolidation of applications into a single
network service, reducing network, equipment,
and operational costs.
